DAVID HAXTON
Born in Indianapolis, IN (1943).
David Haxton (b. 1943, Indianapolis, Indiana) is an artist who works primarily in Photography and earlier in Film. His films from the 1970s and early 1980s utilized a static camera position, and were made in one take. In these films the space filmed is revealed gradually while the intrinsic flatness of the illuminated screen is maintained. His photographic work is the result of a similar interest, to describe space through light. Everything in the photograph is placed, for this purpose. The artist received an MFA in Painting from the University of Michigan in 1967, and has exhibited at the Pompidou, MoMA, the Whitney, the Smithsonian, and many other institutions. Selected public collections include: the Pompidou, MoMA, SFMOMA, Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Indianapolis Museum of Art, Albright Knox Gallery, National Gallery of Art (Australia), Denver Museum of Art, and the Chicago Art Institute.
