A duet performance that musically explores meditations on our connections to water, the performance is inspired by Water Rhythms, a multi-channel sound installation by Susie Ibarra and Michele Koppes on view at Fridman Gallery through December 19. Doors open at 8pm.

About the event

Susie Ibarra is a Filipinx composer, percussionist, and sound artist working to preserve indigenous music and culture. She creates immersive experiences through sound to invite people to connect to their natural and built environments. Ibarra is a 2020 National Geographic Explorer Storyteller, a 2019 Doris Duke Fellow in Music, a Senior TED Fellow, and 2019 Asian Cultural Council Research Fellow. Recent commissions include Talking Gong on New Focus Recordings, Pulsation for Kronos Quartet’s 50 for the Future, and Fragility Etudes for her DreamTime Ensemble for the 2021 Asia Society Triennial. Ibarra currently lives and works in New Paltz, NY.

Immanuel Wilkins is a saxophonist, composer, educator, and bandleader. He has toured with and/or recorded with Jason Moran, the Count Basie Orchestra, Delfeayo Marsalis, Joel Ross, Aaron Parks, Gerald Clayton, Gretchen Parlato, Lalah Hathaway, Solange Knowles, Bob Dylan, and Wynton Marsalis. Wilkins’ debut recording, Omega was released by Blue Note Records in 2020 and  he was voted “Best New Jazz Artist” in the JazzTimes Critics’ Poll and “Best New Talent of 2020” by Musica Jazz. In addition, Omega was named NPR Music’s “Best Debut Jazz Recording of 2020” and the New York Times number one Jazz Recording of 2020. In 2021 Wilkins won the prestigious LetterOne Rising Stars Jazz Award. Originally from the greater Philadelphia area, Wilkins moved to New York in 2015 and received a bachelor’s degree in Music from Juilliard.
