Partial Eclipse: Artist Talk and Performance

Fridman Gallery will host a discussion with Anton Ginzburg and Dasha Shishkin, who will speak about their current exhibition, Partial Eclipse. Following the talk will be an improvised performance with saxophonist Tamio Shiraishi and vocalist Nina Rosalind Dante.
Anton Ginzburg uses film, sculpture, painting, and text-based work to investigate historical narratives and poetic studies of place, representation, and post-Soviet identity. He earned an MFA from Bard College, Milton Avery Graduate School of Arts. Ginzburg’s work has been shown at the 54th Venice Biennale, Blaffer Art Museum, Palais de Tokyo, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, White Columns, Lille3000, the first and second Moscow Biennales, and Cooper-Hewitt. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Ginzburg is based in New York City.
Dasha Shishkin’s signature figurative drawings on Mylar use vivid colors, flattened perspective, and overlapping, non-hierarchical narratives. Shishkin earned an MFA from Columbia University. Solo exhibitions include Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Boulder, Colorado; Museum of Contemporary Art, Santa Barbara, California; Griffelkunst, Hamburg, Germany; and Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, Ohio. Group exhibitions include “Greater New York,” MoMA PS1, New York; Saatchi Gallery, London; and the Dakis Joannou Collection, Athens. Born in Moscow, Russia, Shishkin is based in New York City.

Saxophonist Tamio Shiraishi began performing music in Tokyo's vibrant avant-garde community in the late 1970s. It was mostly at the club called "Minor" in Kichijoji, Tokyo, where he met Keiji Haino as one of his collaborators.
In the 1980s Shiraishi participated the theatrical company named "Homo Fictus", also collaborated with performance artists, butoh dancers and various musicians in Japan.
Shiraishi spent his early 1990s living and performing in both Tokyo and New York City, where he performed in public, at venues such as ABC No Rio, at the East River side in Brooklyn, on the street of Shinjuku, Tokyo. He also performed with various artists including the group "Crash Worship."
In 2008, Shiraishi started an ongoing series of performances in NYC subway stations. Since middle of 1990s, in NYC, he has been continuing collaborations with many musicians and performance artists. Most recent collaborators include Gyna Bootleg among many others.
Soprano/vocalist Nina Dante is a soloist, chamber musician, improviser and composer based in New York City. Musical experimentation and the continual discovery of the voice’s emotive power and technical ability are the inspiring forces behind her work.
Hailed for her “amazing performance of vocal versatility by a uniquely gifted young artist” (Chicago Classical Review), Dante has performed at Resonant Bodies Festival, BAM, Lampo, Issue Project Room, Roulette, the Kitchen, National Sawdust, the University of Chicago’s Contempo, Performa, Indexical, Visiones Sonoras, NYU's Skirball, the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporaneo, the Experimental Sound Studio, New Music Miami, the Latino Music Festival, the Frequency Festival, Festival Interfaz, the Poetry Foundation, and the Renaissance Society, among others.
Dante is co-founder, manager and soprano of the avant garde chamber ensemble Fonema Consort. Her recordings with Fonema can be found on New Focus Recordings and Parlour Tapes+. With Fonema and as a soloist, Dante has given been in residence and given performances at Oberlin Conservatory, Harvard University, UC Berkeley, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, Scripps College, UNAM, the 113 Composers Collective, and New England Conservatory, among others.
Dante’s recent compositions have been featured on the Resonant Bodies Festival, Indexical, the Center for New Music, the 113 Twin Cities New Music Festival and the Essential Indexical recent release Early MMXVIII.
