About the event

"I’m sharing my experience using touch-based instruments to bring sound more into the physical space. This is a practice that helps bring electronic music into the physical world, connecting the body directly to the creation of sounds. I am also sharing my experience using breathing as a way to build up connections to one’s own body to produce electronic music." –– Crystal Peñalosa

C. Lavender presents a performance about connecting with ocean waves on a multitude of scales - from the real to the imaginary. This electoacoustic performance for 8-channels features field recordings taken at NYC beaches, hydrophones in resonant pools throughout the gallery, and live gong playing to connect audience members to the submerged spaces of their mind.

C. Lavender (Lavender Suarez) is an interdisciplinary sound artist, sound healing practitioner, and educator. Her work spans through live performance, recording, installations, compositions, videos and workshops. She creates immersive aural landscapes for listeners; experiences which are intensely physical, emotional, and ultimately cathartic. She is the author of the book Transcendent Waves: How Listening Shapes Our Creative Lives (Anthology Editions), which delves into how listening can be a powerful source of inspiration. C. Lavender has performed, lectured, and hosted workshops at MoMA, The Whitney, The Guggenheim, Hirshhorn Museum, The Rubin Museum, The Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Museum of the Moving Image, Fridman Gallery, Cafe Oto, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute among other venues. She has albums and recordings featured on the labels Editions Mego, Ecstatic Peace!, and RVNG Intl. C. Lavender has been artist-in-residence at Pioneer Works, Harvestworks, A+E Lab (UK), and Wave Farm.

The CT::SWaM Plasticity Office is a sound installation and temporary spatial sound studio inside Fridman Gallery’s office/showroom, designed by sound engineer/artist Daniel Neumann. The installation-system will feature a rotation of performers who will be activating it as a space for events, presentations, workshops, experiments, talks, discussions, etc. The recordings of these activations will get integrated into the regular, daytime installation as added content, which will accumulate and change over the run of the show.
