About the event

Radio, Ctrl, Diffuse

Erik DeLuca and Matt Evans will each share an in-progress performance that poetically diffuses and resists issues of power, fidelity, and supremacy nestled into specific sounds of everyday life. In response to the sensitive snare drum compositions Alvin Lucier developed, Evans will take a non-percussive approach to performing the snare drum while questioning the instrument's often hidden origin as a military technology. Similarly, DeLuca will reflect on how radio broadcasters purchase white space (guard band frequencies that they don’t use) around a desired station to avoid interference.

Erik DeLuca is an artist and musician working with performance, sculpture, and text, in dialogue with social practice and critique. Striving for dialogue and policy change, he sets up scenarios where technologies of dispossession are revealed. Recently, his projects have been included at Braunschweig University of Art, Kling og Bang (Iceland), Sweet Pass Sculpture Park, MASS MoCA, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, and Fieldwork: Marfa. His writing is published in Public Art Dialogue, Mousse, Third Text, The Wire, and Boston Art Review. He received a PhD in Music from the University of Virginia (2016), was a resident at Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture (2017), and was an Asian Cultural Council Fellow in Myanmar (2018). He lectured at the Iceland University of the Arts (2016-2018), was Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at Brown University, and a critic at Rhode Island School of Design. Erik participated in the 2023 Palestinian American Research Center's Faculty Development Seminar and is Associate Professor of Art Education and Contemporary Art Practice at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Matt Evans is a Brooklyn based drummer and producer creating electro-acoustic music that considers the interconnectedness of landscapes, both real and imagined. His compositions draw inspiration from millennial esoterica, natural phenomena, and science fiction, resulting in hypnotic soundscapes and surreal sonic worlds. Combining a meticulous drum-driven approach with imaginatively processed keyboards and samples, Matt crafts a rhythmic, post-ambient music that’s been described as "hyperreal and phantasmal" (Wire Magazine), and "a form of chill complexity" (New York Times). Matt has presented solo projects at the Guggenheim, The Kitchen, Roulette, and 2220 Art+Archives and has released records with Moon Glyph, Whatever’s Clever, Dinzu Artefacts, NNA Tapes, Deathbomb Arc, New Amsterdam, Cantaloupe, Perfect Wave, and Thrill Jockey.

The CT::SWaM Plasticity Office is a sound installation and temporary spatial sound studio inside Fridman Gallery’s office/showroom, designed by sound engineer/artist Daniel Neumann. The installation-system will feature a rotation of performers who will be activating it as a space for events, presentations, workshops, experiments, talks, discussions, etc. The recordings of these activations will get integrated into the regular, daytime installation as added content, which will accumulate and change over the run of the show.
