JACOB KIRKEGAARD

Born Denmark (1975). Lives and works in Copenhagen.

Biography

Jacob Kirkegaard records acoustic and visual properties of carefully selected environments to generate spatial installations, sound sculpture and photography. His works reveal unheard and unseen phenomena, and present listening (to both sound and imagery) as a means of experiencing the world. Kirkegaard has recorded environments as different as subterranean geyser vibrations, empty rooms in Chernobyl, Arctic calving glaciers and tones generated by the human inner ear itself.

Kirkegaard participated in the 21st Biennale of Sydney with Through the Wall, a large-scale installation revealing a merging sound environment from both sides of the Israeli West Bank Barrier. Kirkegaard's sound works have been released on labels such as Important Records (USA), Touch (UK), mAtter (JAP) and Posh Isolation (DK). He is a founding member of the sound art collective freq_out as well as the not-for-profit arts organisation TOPOS. In 2016 Kirkegaard was the sound-artist-in-residency at St. John's College, University of Oxford, U.K.

Jacob Kirkegaard graduated from the Media Art Academy in Cologne in 2006. He has exhibited at numerous institutions throughout the world, including MoMA, The Hood Museum, LOUISIANA, ARoS, KW, The Menil Collection, Rothko Chapel, Aichi Triennale, and Mori Art Museum. His work is in the collections of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, ARoS Aarhus Art Museum in Denmark, and Bell Gallery at Brown University, USA.
